IAAAP hosts emergency response leaders to strengthen community partnerships
MIDDLETOWN, Iowa — The Iowa Army Ammunition Plant recently welcomed leaders from local fire departments, law enforcement agencies, and emergency management organizations for a site visit and tour focused on strengthening partnerships, enhancing communication, and identifying future opportunities for collaboration.
Joining the visit was Joshua F. "Josh" Walsh, President of American Ordnance, the operating contractor at IAAAP. Participants received an overview of the installation's mission, capabilities, emergency response resources, modernization projects, and ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and security of the workforce and surrounding communities.
IAAAP is a government-owned, contractor-operated facility located near Middletown, Iowa. Its mission is to produce quality medium- and large-caliber munitions for the Joint Warfighter and develop adaptable and scalable facilities and infrastructure within a safe, secure, modern and process-driven industrial core that utilizes innovative technologies.
The engagement provided an opportunity for IAAAP leadership and community partners to continue building and sustaining relationships, synchronize messaging during routine operations and emergencies, and ensure all stakeholders maintain a shared understanding of capabilities and resources available throughout the region.
"Strong relationships are built through communication, trust, and collaboration," said Lt. Col. Daniel Nosse, commander of IAAAP. "Bringing our community partners together allows us to better understand one another's capabilities and strengthens our collective ability to respond when assistance is needed."
William Vance, chief of IAAAP’s Protective Division, shared information about a grant the city of Burlington received for $6.7 million from the Department of War to construct a permanent fire station serving the IAAAP. “The funding is being awarded through the Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation’s Defense Community Infrastructure Program,” said Vance. “The new station will serve the plant and the surrounding community.”
Mutual aid remains a critical component of the partnership between IAAAP and local emergency response organizations. “During the past year, IAAAP emergency response teams answered more than 45 requests for assistance beyond the installation’s gates, providing support to neighboring communities when additional resources were needed,” said Robbie Tapp, IAAAP fire chief.
Likewise, local fire, police, and emergency management agencies have provided support to IAAAP on several occasions, demonstrating the value of a strong regional response network and a shared commitment to public safety.
The tour also allowed attendees to exchange information, discuss lessons learned, and explore future opportunities for training, coordination, and preparedness initiatives that benefit both the installation and the communities it serves.
Ammunition production demands a steadfast commitment to safety, making the protection of the employees, the environment, and critical infrastructure the top priority. The mutual aid partnerships and the new fire station are essential to that mission, ensuring rapid response capabilities and enhanced emergency preparedness to safeguard the workforce, surrounding communities, and the installation that supports the nation's defense readiness.
