Cooler, safer, more efficient turf ready for play at Highland Heritage Regional Park
Two cooler, safer synthetic fields are now open for play at Highland Heritage Regional Park.
The replacement surfaces are designed to be 35 degrees cooler and preserve approximately 3 million gallons of water per year.
The project advances the County’s move away from crumb rubber, an infill made from recycled tires. The new fields use an alternative infill designed to retain less heat and reduce surface temperatures by approximately 35 degrees, creating a more comfortable playing environment on warm, sunny days.
Keeping the fields synthetic preserves substantial water savings. Compared with natural grass, each field saves an estimated 1 million to 1.5 million gallons annually. Synthetic turf also requires less maintenance than natural-grass fields.
The replacement is part of Douglas County’s long-term maintenance program for its 11 synthetic fields. Synthetic turf typically requires replacement every 8 to 10 years as regular use wears down the fibers and affects safety and performance. Here in Douglas County, the Parks and Recreation Department’s robust maintenance program has extended the life of these fields by an additional 2 years.
On fields E and F, deteriorating fibers had made the aging turf harder and slicker, increasing the risk of injuries and trip hazards. The new turf restores safer, more consistent playing surfaces and has a 12-year warranty – 2-4 years longer than typical synthetic turf.
The durable new surfaces can accommodate multiple sports and provide dependable playing conditions throughout the year. Both fields are now open for play.
