Our Neighborhood Voices to Take Fight for Local Control to League of California Cities Annual Conference in Anaheim

Coalition will host a rally at Booth #262 to garner support for constitutional amendment resolution ahead of critical General Assembly vote

ANAHEIM, CA, UNITED STATES, September 2, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Our Neighborhood Voices (ONV), a coalition of citizens from throughout California, announced today it will have an informational booth in the Expo Hall at the League of California Cities Annual Conference, taking place September 23–25, 2026 in Anaheim, where hundreds of city council members, mayors, and elected officials from across the state will gather.

ONV will host a rally at 5:30 PM on Wednesday, September 23 at Booth #262, featuring speakers addressing one of the most consequential local governance questions facing California cities: whether to restore final local authority over housing and land use decisions through a state constitutional amendment.

The Resolution at Stake

A resolution sponsored by the City of Murrieta will be considered by the League’s Housing, Community, and Economic Development Policy Committee on September 17, 2026. Should it pass the Policy Committee, the Resolution Committee will consider approval on September 24, 2026, and the General Assembly on September 25, 2026. If adopted, the resolution would direct the League to establish a working group to pursue a state constitutional amendment, or another path forward adopted by the working group aimed at restoring cities’ authority over housing and land use — authority that has been continuously eroded by Sacramento through ever-increasing state housing mandates.

The resolution, as currently drafted, references a November 2030 election target. Our Neighborhood Voices is advocating to accelerate that timeline to 2028, arguing that the urgency of the local control crisis facing California cities does not allow for further delay.

ONV is partnering with representatives from the City of Murrieta to ensure that cities attend the voting session and support the resolution at the conference.

We’re not prescribing a specific solution; we’re proposing a framework that allows cities across California to work together toward a collaborative path forward with the state.” said Ron Holliday, Mayor Pro Tempore of the City of Murrieta.

Why It Matters

Supporters of the resolution argue that state housing mandates have imposed rigid, one-size-fits-all requirements on communities with vastly different needs, resources, and histories — stripping local governments of the flexibility to plan for their own futures. A working group aimed at considering the effort to place a constitutional amendment on the ballot, they contend, may be one of the few durable mechanisms to restore that balance of power, since statutory fixes remain vulnerable to reversal by future legislatures.

Our Neighborhood Voices' presence at the conference is aimed at ensuring every delegate walking the expo floor understands what's at stake before the General Assembly vote — and has the information and resources needed to support the resolution.
