Finnish Leader Comments on US Greenland Remarks

(MENAFN) Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo on Friday described the latest US statements regarding Greenland as a "negotiation tactic" and cautioned that any potential military seizure of the territory would be "catastrophic."

In an interview with a public broadcaster, Orpo emphasized that the US rhetoric surrounding Greenland might simply be a "negotiation tactic." He warned, "That would be a catastrophic situation, because a Nato country would be intervening militarily in the territory of another Nato country."

Highlighting NATO’s importance, Orpo noted that the alliance is “valuable” to the United States. He added that he does not think Washington would go “that far” in attempting to take control of Greenland.

"I believe Finns can see quite clearly that our security and defence depend very much on the United States," Orpo continued. "Nevertheless, we defend the multilateral world order, the role of UN organisations, and international law. These are the basic principles that a small country like Finland needs."

The Finnish premier also reaffirmed that the future of Greenland should be determined by Greenlanders and Danes themselves.

Following the January 3 military action in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro, US President Donald Trump restated his long-standing interest in acquiring Greenland for reasons tied to national security.
