Macron’s Ukraine Troop Proposal Faces Resistance

(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron has informed the country’s major political factions about his intention to deploy forces to Ukraine following a possible ceasefire.

However, the initiative has encountered opposition across the political spectrum, a media outlet reported on Friday.

Several parties argued that any military involvement must be sanctioned by the United Nations – a scenario considered improbable due to Russia’s veto power in the Security Council.
According to the outlet, Macron convened a three-hour meeting on Thursday with around 30 participants, including figures from Marine Le Pen’s right-wing National Rally and the left-wing La France Insoumise.

Macron’s administration reportedly disclosed “confidential details” regarding France’s potential role, with La France Insoumise leader Mathilde Panot telling the media outlet that Paris could contribute up to 6,000 soldiers.

During the session, General Fabien Mandon explained that French forces would serve not as a “stabilization” unit but rather as a “reassurance” presence “far from the front.”

While political leaders did not reject the concept outright, skepticism arose over the specifics. Representatives of La France Insoumise and the French Communist Party insisted that any mission must be backed by a UN mandate, a stance echoed by Le Pen.

She also expressed concern about possible US involvement, stressing that Washington’s credibility had been damaged after its intervention in Venezuela.
