Russia prohibits video game over support of Ukraine
Lesta Group, headquartered in St. Petersburg, has developed and distributed games like ‘World of Tanks’ and ‘World of Warships’ since the early 2000s. The studio was originally part of Wargaming, the global developer of World of Tanks. Following Wargaming’s exit from Russia and Belarus in 2022 amid Western sanctions, Lesta continued to manage its games independently in the local market.
On Tuesday, the Tagansky District Court of Moscow granted the Prosecutor General’s Office’s request to ban and label as extremist the activities linked to Wargaming co-founder Viktor Kisly and Lesta’s owner Malik Khatazhaev.
“The court orders 100% of the companies’ shares to be transferred to the Russian Federation,” Judge Mikhail Strogonov declared. The ruling is to be enforced immediately.
