Trump Is Open to Peace Talks with Russia, Ukraine
(MENAFN) United States Leader Donald Trump is reportedly receptive to participating in a summit with the presidents of Russia and Ukraine in Türkiye, according to a statement from the White House on Monday.
The idea is part of a larger diplomatic initiative to help bring an end to the conflict initiated by the Kremlin against Ukraine.
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt shared that “The president has said he’s open to it if it comes to that,” but emphasized Trump’s belief that it’s vital for “both of these leaders and both sides to sit down at the table together.”
This statement aligns with recent developments involving Turkish Leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Earlier that same day, Erdogan proposed convening a summit that would include himself along with the leaders of the United States, Russia, and Ukraine.
Following a Cabinet session, Erdogan expressed that his “greatest wish” is to unite Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy either in Istanbul or Ankara.
He added, “I would even like to bring [US President Donald] Trump along,” as diplomatic delegations from Russia and Ukraine held a second round of peace talks in Istanbul.
Reflecting on these discussions, Erdogan described the meeting as “truly a magnificent meeting.”
He noted that, while prisoner exchanges had occurred previously, this round saw the number surpass one thousand.
In addition to these exchanges, remains of deceased individuals from both countries were returned outside the formal swap process, which Erdogan highlighted as another significant development.
“These numbers are also very large. We are truly proud of this,” he said.
Erdogan concluded by stating that if a summit involving all leaders does take place in Türkiye, he will “also meet with them at this meeting so that we can turn Istanbul into a center of peace,” underscoring Türkiye’s aim to serve as a mediator in the ongoing conflict.
