Russia Confirms First-Ever Drone Strike Hits Siberia
According to Kobzev, one of the drones also crashed into an abandoned building in the village of Novomaltinsk. He noted that the UAVs appeared to have been launched from a small truck, though the exact number used in the operation remains undetermined. Social media posts circulating online—yet to be officially verified—suggest at least three drones were involved.
The launch site has been “blocked,” said Kobzev, adding that there is “no threat to the lives and health of civilians.” Emergency crews and security forces were quickly sent to the impacted area.
While Kobzev stopped short of naming a culprit, reports from both Russian and Ukrainian outlets have pointed to Kiev as the likely instigator.
The attack follows a sharp uptick in drone strikes deep into Russian territory by Ukrainian forces in recent weeks, despite continued diplomatic talks aimed at resolving the ongoing war. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has accused Ukraine of deliberately sabotaging peace negotiations.
In retaliation, Moscow has launched precision strikes targeting Ukraine’s defense manufacturing infrastructure, along with military storage and assembly zones.
Coinciding with the Irkutsk incident, officials in Russia’s far north Murmansk Region also reported a drone incursion, though they have yet to release detailed information.
