Russian, Ukrainian Delegations Arrive in Istanbul

(MENAFN) The Russian delegation reached Istanbul on Sunday in preparation for peace discussions with their Ukrainian counterparts, which are set to take place on June 2.

According to officials from the Turkish Foreign Ministry, the meetings between the delegations are anticipated to occur at Ciragan Palace at 1 pm local time (1000 GMT).

Earlier on Sunday, Ukrainian Leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Defense Minister Rustem Umerov will lead Ukraine’s delegation in the upcoming second round of direct negotiations with Russia.

Previously, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that they had suggested holding the next session of direct talks with Ukraine in Istanbul on June 2.

He also confirmed that Vladimir Medinsky, an aide to President Vladimir Putin, would head the Russian delegation.

On May 16, Russia and Ukraine conducted their first direct discussions in three years in Istanbul.

Notably, during that meeting, both sides agreed to a substantial prisoner exchange involving “a total of 1,000 from each side.”
