Orban claims EU giving Ukraine ‘empty promises’
“The EU doesn’t have a single penny left. It has spent all of its money,” Orban stated. “Brussels keeps talking about arming Ukraine and maintaining its army, but in reality, it can’t find the funds. These are just empty promises.”
The Hungarian leader emphasized the economic strain the conflict has placed on EU member states and urged Brussels to support US presidential candidate Donald Trump’s proposed peace negotiations with Russia. He argued that Hungarian families should not bear the economic burden of the ongoing war.
During Thursday’s meeting, Hungary refused to endorse an EU statement calling for increased military aid to Ukraine. Orban reiterated Budapest’s stance, stating, “We will not allow a common European position to be formed that includes Hungary and is pro-war.”
Hungary has consistently used its veto power to stall or block EU aid packages, arguing that diplomacy should take precedence over further escalation with Russia.
Meanwhile, EU leaders failed to reach an agreement on a proposed €40 billion ($43 billion) military support package for Ukraine. The plan, spearheaded by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, faced strong opposition, with Italy and Spain deeming it too costly.
According to Politico, diplomats from multiple countries criticized the proposal, with one reportedly calling it “botched.” Euronews further reported that some officials declared the initiative “dead” after it failed to gain traction at the Brussels meeting.
