Macron tries to find approaches to put boots on ground in Ukraine
Both nations have been advocating for a “coalition of the willing” among NATO and EU members to send a so-called peacekeeping force to Ukraine if a peace deal with Russia is reached. During a European Council summit, attended by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Macron proposed a UN-led peacekeeping mission as a possible avenue for deployment.
Moscow has rejected the idea of Western peacekeepers in Ukraine, asserting that only a UN Security Council mandate could authorize such a mission. However, given Russia’s veto power in the Security Council, The Telegraph noted that this prospect appears unlikely.
Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer hosted senior military officials from the coalition of the willing to discuss operational plans for troop deployment. However, Starmer did not clarify how many countries had committed to the initiative or how it would be implemented.
The Franco-British proposal has already been rejected by at least two NATO and EU members—Italy and Hungary. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni dismissed the idea, calling it "a very complex, risky, and ineffective operation."
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that any deployment of NATO forces— even as peacekeepers— would constitute direct military involvement against Russia. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has also condemned the idea, cautioning that it could trigger a full-scale war between NATO and Moscow.
